Vision

The school library should be the heart of every school. It is a place where students and teachers can not only come to read, but also access a plethora of books, technology, and resources freely, safely, and in a comfortable, engaging environment. As a school librarian I will focus on promotion and advocacy of the school library as well as building a love for reading and learning amongst students. I will recognize the importance of strong media literacy skills and will encourage Students to become independent, lifelong learners of information through instruction, quality learning experiences, and collaborative activities. Perhaps most importantly, I will be committed to creating and maintaining a trusting, caring, creative, interactive, and orderly environment where teaching and learning are exciting and engaging and students are assisted as they develop skills.

About me...

My name is Michelle Swearingen, but most of the kids call me, "Mrs. S." I taught kindergarten and 1st grade for almost 10 years but decided to go back to school later in life so that I could teach K-5th in the library. I graduated with a Master's in Library and Information Science in 2019. This is my fourth year as a school librarian, as well as my fourth year at GHES. I have been married to my husband, a professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, for 8 years. We have two kids living in our house, one is in middle school and the other is in high school. We also have one kid in her second year of college and one who graduated with her degree this summer. We live in Rock Hill with the kids, two dogs, two cats, and Fluffy when he's not at school. In whatever spare time I have, I enjoy reading (of course!) but I also love camping, hiking, and traveling to obscure places. I'm a bit of a nerd, I'm still in love with the 80's and 90's, enjoy cult classic and horror films, and collect vintage toys.
